I’m loving this series of zines, Let it Be Beautiful, by Elizabeth Barker and Laura Jane Faulds.
This is my new Beatles zine! It’s a short story told from the perspective of a little girl who intensely loves and fears the Rolling Stones, the ocean, and her wild-haired/alcoholic 22-year-old uncle John. Kinda like Adventures in Babysitting crossed with a mid-’70s Bruce Springsteen album, co-starring a six-foot-tall stoner-fantasist named Sally. Excerpt:
“There were no windows in the living room, so the smoke hung around in wispy little clouds. I watched all the different ways they held their cigarettes and sucked in and exhaled, like how my uncle made his eyebrows furrowed and thoughtful when he drew the smoke in, or how he sometimes blew the smoke out through his nose like a bad dragon. When Sally exhaled, she tilted her head back and shot the smoke out like she was aiming for the sky. Her hair swept against the floor and part of me wished I could steal it off her and wear it on my own head. I wanted long hair so bad but I wasn’t allowed to have it yet - my mom said I had to wait till I was twelve.”
$3 for a copy, or $5 when purchased with Laura Jane’s new zine, Savoy Truffle.
Also, here is an Emily mixtape for you.
This morning I left a couple of my Let It Be Beautiful zines on the picnic bench in front of Laurel Canyon Country Store in hopes that Jim Morrison’s ghost will find them and get me a book deal/adopt me. I Facebooked about it and Tatyana commented with this video and now I want to wake up to this song every morning forever, and then drink some sexy kind of black tea on top of a mountain, possibly while wearing a macrame shawl.
Also at Laurel Canyon Country Store, I bought Pop Chips and “Michelle Obama-scented” incense.
Laura Jane Faulds and I are publishing a collection of zines to help promote our Beatles book (we’re rewriting Beatles songs as stories or essays - 300 songs in total!). Our hot new Etsy shop has little excerpts from each zine; each book-baby costs $3, and it’s $13 for all six. What a sweet Halloweekend treat!
